Home soda systems were invented by Guy Gilbey in 1903. Later on the systems allowed the addition of syrups and flavors to create carbonated flavored beverages. It was popular in the 1970s and 1980s when there were a number of brand name syrups available like the big beverage giant Shweppes.
After the company SodaStream and Soda-Club merged in the 1990’s, the idea of home soda making was re-launched with an emphasis on healthier drinks. Nowadays there is an environmental aspect to it as well, using less plastic bottles and having less of an impact on the environment by making soda at home.
